do heb take apple pay

A question many of the HEB customers ask is, ‘Do HEB take Apple Pay?’ The reason for the confusion is HEB has its own proprietary built-in payment system. The only payment option they give the customers is self-checkout from their app and other digital, online and in-store payment.

In this article, we will walk you through what HEB is, what Apple Pay is, does HEB accept Apple Pay and what other alternatives they accept for their payment, and what the accepted payment methods for HEB are.

What is HEB?

HEB stands for Howard E. Butt, and the letters even match their slogan, ‘Here’s everything better,’ which is a private supermarket chain mainly based in San Antonio, Texas. They have around 300 odd stores or more across the US.

They are a large and independent food retail company with annual sales of $35 billion. They are producing groceries that are low-priced, friendly shopping.

They have so many products privately labelled, which include flour, pumpkin crème, peanut butter, sangria-flavoured soda, Texas-shaped tortilla, apple-celery juice, taco-truck salsa and also pot-ready spaghetti etc.

Their speciality is that they customize their products for each location. This way, they can perfectly keep up with the customer demands at the specific location. This way, they don’t lose customers.

What is Apple Pay?

Apple Pay is a contactless payment method introduced by Apple Inc. It’s a mobile payment system from Apple supporting the apple devices like the iPhone, iPads, Apple Watch and Mac.

Apple Pay is a popular payment method used by many stores all over the world. The payment system has easily taken over the debit and credit card payment market.

It is such a secure payment service with two-factor authentication with face ID, touch ID and passcode security system.

The Apple Pay mobile payment works by wireless communication, which doesn’t require us to use the internet or other Wi-Fi network. It is because the service operates with NFC or near-field communication with an embedded secure element or the eSE for performing cryptographic functions and secure payment data storage.

People also use Apple Pay to pay for certain public transport networks as well. You don’t have any form of extra charges or fees for using Apple Pay. It’s such a convenient payment system.

Does HEB Accept Apple Pay?

Actually, no, HEB doesn’t take apple pay for both its online and physical stores. It is because HEB has its own built-in payment system.

HEB is also having its own mobile app called the HEB Go for self-checkout and H-E-B online for delivery. Their only form of contactless payment allowed for customers to use is debit and credit cards, in-store cash payments, and other forms of digital payment other than Google Pay and Apple Pay.

Why HEB doesn’t have Apple Pay?

Why they don’t accept Apple Pay or Google Pay is because they have their own form of the contactless payment system, this is a payment system designed and invested in by HEB as its own, and the payment system is quite the rival to Apple Pay. And allowing customers to use Apple Pay will result in a wasteful investment as nobody is going to use their payment system.

Having to use other forms of contactless payment like Apple Pay will end up creating a huge loss for the company.

HEB Alternatives that Accept Apple Pay

We could use the Apple map to find out what other alternative stores are using Apple Pay. This is such a convenient, easy and secure way of making payments without carrying cash or cards with us. And here are some of the most popular grocery stores similar to HEB that are using Apple Pay for payment.

  • Bashas’
  • Dick’s Fresh Market
  • Albertsons
  • FoodMaxx
  • Harvey’s Supermarket
  • Farm Fresh Food and Supermarket
  • Hannaford
  • Lin’s Fresh Market
  • Rite Aid
  • Shop ‘n save
  • Schnucks
  • Trader Joe’s
  • Sprouts Farmer’s Market
  • United Supermarkets
  • Winn-Dixie
  • Wegmans

That’s not all; there are so many fashion retail stores, retail stores, sportswear and also other types of stores that take Apple Pay even though HEB doesn’t.

If HEB didn’t have their own form of contactless pay and self-check-out app, it might have considered using Apple Pay. HEB’s proprietary payment system doesn’t allow for it.

What are the Accepted Payment Methods at HEB

What are the Accepted Payment Methods at HEB?

Except for Apple Pay and Google Pay, they accept all payment methods for their groceries. Their payment options include all debit and credit cards, cash payments and their own contactless payment methods. Here is a list of payment methods they use;

  • American Express cards
  • Master cards and Visa cards
  • All Debit cards and Discover cards
  • HEB gift cards
  • WIC and other limited WIC EBT cards
  • EBT cards
  • Cash
  • HEB Go

If you’re willing to use any non-credit or debit card, the only payment types are HEB gift cards, the WIC EBT, EBT and cash payment. Their own form of payment is HEB Go which you can download on Androids and iOS devices.

And here is how we use the HEB Go to make payments at their store;

  1. Download the app, and as the first step, scan the barcodes of the products that you’re going to buy in the store.
  2. Go to the section that has the HEB self-checkout and tab on the option to ‘start checkout’. Now scan the QR code on the machine and choose the payment method.
  3. Finally, complete the payment by authenticating the payment.

They also have a separate app called the My H-E-B specifically for online shopping with HEB Grocery. And this is how their online delivery works;

  1. Download the HEB app when you install and open the app. There you will have ‘delivery’ at the top of their apps menu. Click on it.
  2. Then enter all the relevant details, including your address, date, time of delivery and other details like the order details. Then add all of the items to your cart to checkout.
  3. Now click on the checkout option after entering all the details into the checkout and finalize.
